During the course of mobilization of the splenic flexure to obtain adequate length for a colorectal anastomosis, a 1.5-cm splenic capsular tear is identified on the anterior aspect of the spleen. After initial 200-mL blood loss, the left upper quadrant is packed for 20 minutes. Upon removal of the packs, minimal oozing is visualized. The patient remains hemodynamically stable.
